Our original crew still meets every year to “finish the campaign”
Our names are Brooks Dibble and Emily Bader–two industrial designers who became friends and business partners during college. We were inspired by all our creative friends who during crazy long DND sessions would craft terrain, sketch monsters and characters, and used this table top game to form deep connective friendships that have now lasted years later.
Our party was given the name “band of idiots” by the villain of our campaign for all the stupid plans we tried to make succeed and the name stuck with us. It reminds us of what makes DND fun: the people with you and having a space where creative curiosity is allowed to be dumb, and hey, it just might work.
The Band of Idiots operate out of a small (but mighty!) craft room in Columbus, Ohio. Powered by our trusty 3D printers named after characters in our old campaign and the maker space at our local library, we make and design all our products in house.
With backgrounds in industrial design, we both love how design can be used to solve problems and explore new ideas. For our capstone senior year of college we were inspired by the adventures of Jacques Cousteau and the myth of Atlantis to design an underwater research facility. We were able to explore all the systems that would have to be in place for that to become a reality. Overall it taught us how to go to the experts, work as team and explore the “what if…?” question.
